Case Studies

While Duraseal has tested and retested its nano coatings in a full gamut of environments and situations, industrial leaders, universities and corporate firms have or are in the process of conducting hundreds of studies. This still relatively new, breakthrough technology is garnering scientific interest around the globe. So far, independent studies have been consistent with our own findingsDuraseal Coatings, proving that Duraseal's  Penetration Coatings, in certain harsh and common environments , outperform anything on the market today.

Mechanical Properties

In March 2010, Pecan Pipeline asked AADFW Inc. to assess the effects of Duraseal's nanotechnology and the company tested 12-inch x 0.250-inch wall-line pipe. The pipe was tested to evaluate effects on mechanical properties, weldability and corrosion resistance to carbonic acid.  Results proved that there was no reduction in weld properties when made on Duraseal-coated pipes. The study shows that metal treated with Duraseal does not need any special handling. Treated parts and equipment can be used in exactly the same way as always only, when coated with Duraseal, the coated parts are harder and significantly more durable.

Prevention of CO2 Intrusion

A Ph.D-level analysis confirmed that Duraseal-treated equipment performs much better than the untreated in high CO2 environments. Development Scientist Brian Pate found that cured Duraseal forms a highly hydrophobic, cross-linked barrier film that not only inhibits ingress of the corrosive anions, but it also modifies surface pores such that free metal sites are not available to react with these corrosive CO2-generated anions. Duraseal's acid-protective properties were confirmed as well as the fact that our formulas offer high abrasion resistance where sand etching might be a concern.

Case Study: Pump

Echo Production Inc. found a way to increase the production capabilities of a well in an extremely economic way — by simply treating a low-grade pump with Duraseal. In this specific example, the best Harbison-Fischer pump available was averaging 10 BOPD before it had to be reset above a stuck-string deviation. With the Duraseal-treated pump in place, production bumped up to 85 BOPD and, where the best pump on the market was, at most, lasting 60 days, the treated pump ran for more than twice that. The 8x increase in production meant an income of $635,000 in the first 120 days of operation.

Case Study: Tubing

Red Willow Production Co. drilled a well in 2002 and, over the years, it was nothing but repair after repair after repair. The main problem in the well was carbon dioxide infiltration which led to corrosion and flow stoppage. When Duraseal's  nano coating was put to work, tubing that was once failing in a matter of weeks was lasting months. In fact, untreated tubes were failing after as little as 35 days and the company had never seen tubing last more than 169 days. With Duraseal-treated tubing running under high-pressure conditions for more 240 days, Red Willow found the benefits of treating tubing with Duraseal's specially formulated nano coatings were undeniable as profit records were broken. The operator concluded that the well has reached a payout on the tubing at $2.90/mcf and is now at a record profit with a current $5.7/mcf Nymex price.

Case Study: Joints

Admiral Bay Inc. has never seen in-hole tubing last more than 45 days but, when treated with Duraseal, the company saw a 9x increase in life. Tubing installed in September 2009 ran for 13 months, defying the company's expectations by leaps and bounds. Because the results were so extraordinary, the operator initially concluded well conditions had changed and installed an uncoated joint in the bottom hole only to prove his own conclusion wrong. The untreated joint lasted 14 days. Given the findings, Admiral Bay Inc. now uses nothing but Duraseal-treated joints.

Test on Outside of Pipe

Analytical Services Inc., located at Dartmouth E.M., conducted a test on the outside of treated pipe. It was determined that Duraseal is truly nanotechnology. While other companies claim to have it, Duraseal's formulas are passing the test of authenticity. Nanotechnology is, in a nutshell, the study of manipulating matter on a molecular level and, while there's plenty of surface coatings out there that claim to be true nanotech, Duraseal is proven to actually change matter into something stronger, faster and longer lasting. It brings metal to the highest possible level inside and out. This physical change is why  more and more oil and gas corporations are taking advantage of our penetrating nano sealants.
